Festival Of Lights

We were asked to make a jacket, part of a 3 piece ensemble, to celebrate the Hindu Festival of Lights, Diwali.

Embellishing the jacket, vest and trousers was custom embroidery using religious iconography associated with the culture and religion of Hinduism, which turned out to be a learning experience for our in-house artist.

To research and develop the original initial artwork took a couple of days of enlightened reading and religious tutoring from our embroiderer.

Finally it was decided upon to use a delicate Lotus flower adorned with hanging bead work to adorn the back of the jacket, which draws inspiration from Mehndi designs.

On the side is original artwork of the God called Ganesh and elsewhere are small accompanying Chakra symbols, chosen to represent luck, harmony and success in life. Research and expert advice in symbolism assured Ganesh would be smiling contentedly.

Once the designs were prepared, it was the job of our talented embroiderer to bring these concepts to life, and it was done exquisitely.

The entire commission was a collaborative effort between the talents that reside in our atelier and the wishes and aspirations of our patrons: fabric choice, surgeon cuff detail coupled with the notion of a bit of extra length in the jacket paying homage to religion wear.

Made of a fine deep crimson Gaberdine, chosen from one of the traditional colours used in the festival, combined with the embroidered decorations, it came together to make a powerful statement.

As any fashion should.
